In 1870, the railroad built a line to Guthrie and Wellington; this connection increased commerce and transportation in the area. The towns of Hutchinson and Salina were established near where both lines crossed. In 1905, when Wichita became an independent city, it annexed parts of Sedgwick County including Manhattan; however, that annexation never happened because the city council refused to give its approval for it because it felt that Hutchinson would become too large a rival. In 1907–08, construction began on what would become Wichita State University; as part of that project, portions of downtown Sedgwick were destroyed and rebuilt as new buildings for SMU. Today's economy relies largely on agriculture and manufacturing; as well as tourism which has grown in recent years due to Wichita State University's global reach. However there are some signs of progress: over $200 million has been invested in local businesses since 2009 alone – making Wichita one of the most entrepreneurial cities in America!

The first settlers arrived in 1867 and built a cabin on an old Indian burial ground. They called their settlement "Manhattan". The name originated from the fact that Manhattan Creek flowed through the town. In 1881, the town post office was renamed "New York" after New York City. In 1907, Manhattan re incorporated as a village. That year it had a population of 100 residents. By 1920, there were just 14 residents remaining in Manhattan and it abandoned its status as a village. On October 1, 1925, all but two of the buildings in downtown were destroyed by fire when an oil pipeline exploded near them while they were being used as storage facilities for crude oil products shipped downriver to Wichita Falls. The last resident of Manhattan died on January 24, 1984 at the age of 102 years old.
