Davenport named the settlement after his chief advisor on Indian Affairs, James Kirtland Stroudman: "Manhattan" (from English "Mansfield") being short form of Kirtland's full name which was also Albany[1]. In 1861, Manhattan had a post office and two stores. It became an incorporated town in 1872 when all of Osage County were organized into one county. In 1907 it merged with Topeka to become one city with a population of over 100,000 people[2].
