Liberal, Kansas History began in 1854 when a group of citizens of the town of Liberal moved to the area and founded the first settlement there. The town was named for Prince Alfred, Duke of York, who was also known as King George III. In 1858, the townsite was enlarged when the adjacent land from present-day Wichita were annexed. The name "Liberal" originated from this period and is still used today. In 1860, Liberal residents formed a local government which remained in operation until 1912. In that year, Kansas Territory was created and Liberal became part of it. From then on, it grew rapidly as a farming community with churches and businesses being established soon after. In 1916, Liberal experienced its biggest growth yet when it became one of the few communities within the newly created city of Topeka. This development helped to spur additional economic development in what would become one of Kansas’s most vibrant cities. Today, Liberal remains an active community with many businesses and services available to its residents. It has also been recognized numerous times by various national awards including being named a “Best Place to Live” by Forbes magazine in 2002 and winning distinction as one of “The 100 Best Small Towns To Live In America” by USA Today in 2007. As an example of how successful liberal can be despite some challenges – during an annual event celebrating its history last year (held at Topeka State University), Liberals raised more than $30,000 for local charities!
Liberal Kansas was a state in the Western United States from 1867 to 1907. It is now part of the Oklahoma Territory. The name comes from the party's position that government should be limited to "the people" and not "the rich." The first elections for representatives to the territorial legislature were held on November 3, 1867, with only six Democrats running against re-elected Republicans. In 1870, when Kansas became a state, four other Democrats ran as independents; all but one won office. However, by 1875, seven out of ten members of the territorial legislature were Republican. In 1890, two more independent candidates won seats; however, all three died before taking office. The remaining five members elected a Republican governor and speaker of the territorial assembly. In 1907, Kansas joined the Union (Ulysses S. Grant) during the American Civil War and came under Union control until May 14th when it was admitted into the United States as a new state. On January 16th, 1908 Liberal Kansas seceded from Ulysses S Grant's America and became an independent country once again under Democratic rule until it merged back into America on February 15th 1911 when it was finally annexed into Oklahoma Territory
