Liberal, Kansas is a small town in the towns of Emporia and Liberal in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by Protestant settlers from Ohio. The first store was built on Main Street and it operated for about a year before being closed due to financial problems. In 1882, the first school opened in Liberal and it operated until 1906 when it was replaced by a new building on West Third Street which served as the town's first library. In 1907, Liberal began purchasing land east of its current location and construction began on what would become their municipalhall. The hall was completed in 1915 and served as the town's main meeting place for many years until it was supplanted by a new hall on East Second Street which became the town's new courthouse in 1978. Liberal has had several different scopes since its founding including two that were used during World War II: an American V-1 Flying bomb detector scope nicknamed "The Beast" and an R-4E Skymaster observatory telescope nicknamed "Gemini". Gemini also served as equipment for both NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) located adjacent to Liberal along with other government agencies including NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) across the street from JPL while also serving as a test facility for various weapons systems such as missiles and nuclear weapons testing conducted at nearby Blue Grass Army Airfield known today as Pryor Field. Additionally, JPL developed three entirely unique astronomical instruments: one called "Green Bank", another called "Albany", and still another known simply as "JPL Observatory". These three instruments were eventually combined into one instrument referred to today simply as "JPL". In recent times, liberal has seen some growth with several businesses opening up within the past few years such as a health spa/massage parlor/SEO company called Jumpman Health & Fitness; a hair salon/spa called 3 Hair Studio; plus more recently an eatery/bar called Park Grill that opened up next door to Jumpman Health & Fitness back in 2016! This recent development not only demonstrates how liberalism is slowly but surely growing but also underscores how important education is when it comes to keeping these types of places open even during tough times!

In recent years the town has seen strong growth in the aerospace industry; today Liberal is home to two Area 405 manufacturing plants owned by Boeing Co., one of the world's largest defense contractors.
