Liberal, Kansas was a town in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. It was incorporated as a townsite on July 1, 1907 by an act of the Wichita Board of Education. The name is derived from the Liberal Party's platform which called for more education and less corporal punishment. The community began as a small farming village and grew to include over 500 people by the time it became a full-time town. Liberal had one school, one grocery store and one hardware store until 1954 when it integrated with Wichita. In that year, it also changed its name to Wichita. Liberal is significant in that it was the first U.S. town to be chartered as an official city within the current boundaries of Wichita metropolitan area; it annexed Douglas in 1912 and Topeka in 1913. Additionally, Liberal served as the capital of Dodge County from 1907 until 1911 while Topeka served as the county seat until 1915 when Griswold was chosen instead.
