With land prices increasing during this time period and more people moving into Liberal, businesses flourished and many notable citizens were born there including Nelson Acheson, Jr., Harry Truman, Julius Caesar Maxey, Franklin D Roosevelt (and his wife Eleanor), Jesse Jackson (a Congressman from Illinois), Milton Bradley (a candidate for President in 1988), James Buchanan (Secretary of State under George H.W. Bush), Bill Clinton (Presidential Candidate 1993) and Barack Obama (Presidential Candidate 2008).
