The story of Liberal begins in 1867, when the United States purchased the territory from Mexico. The town of Liberal was founded by American settlers in that year, and it soon became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1876, Liberal became a state within the United States; however, it only attained full independence in 1907. Today, Liberal is a thriving community located in south-central Kansas about 15 miles west of Wichita. The early years of Liberal were filled with turmoil. The region was unsettled due to conflicts between Native Americans and Mexicans. In 1867, violence flared as American settlers tried to take control of the area. A group of Indians led by Chief Black Hawk fought back against the invaders; this battle is known as the Battle of Clearwater creek. Despite this serious conflict, Liberals continued to grow during those years; in 1876, they reached 1,000 residents. In 1907, Kansas joined the Unionist Party along with several other southern states that seceded from America during the Civil War (1861-1865). As part of this change in allegiance, Liberals also changed their name to Kansas: first changing it to Topeka before settling on Liberal in 1889. Since then, liberalism has been an integral part ofKansas culture and politics; today liberals make up about one quarter of all registered voters statewide (though this number may be higher because liberal activists oftenregister as independents). Kansas' history is closely tied to that of America itself: both states were created from land acquired during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), which resulted in many dead and wounded soldiers being brought into northeastern US forces under General Winfield Scott at what is now Topeka on July 6th 1850 (). subsequently all Mexican lands eastward than 20 miles were set off into new districts - six districts forming present day Kansas while all Mexican lands westward than 20 miles were placed under US military occupation called Ft David form October 9th 1862 until May 14th 1871 (. currently principal city Olathe)
Liberal was a town in Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by my great-aunt Laura Smith and her husband James L. Liberal. The town grew around the liberal grocery store, which became the most successful business in the community. In 1912, Liberal consolidated with nearby towns of Garden City and Deerfield to form Liberal-Deerfield Township.
