Liberal, Kansas is a small town in east-central Kansas. It was founded in 1881 by William T. Reid and his wife, Anna Reid. The first store was built on the present site of the town in 1882. In 1915, Liberal became a city. The first mayor of Liberal was George Wickersham. For most of its history, Liberal has been an ammunition producer and consumer center for the area around it. Ammunition production began in 1889 when local residents James and Amie Ballantyne started manufacturing arms and munitions at their home on the old Reid farmstead near present day Liberal. In 1874, another man by the name of Harry W. Bennett started producing bullets also made from steel and brass. These bullets were also more powerful than the Rockefeller Bullet and could penetrate deeply into human flesh. As a result, they quickly became popular with gunmen and bounty hunters seeking to kill targets as large as lions or elephants. By 1899, Ammunition Company had become one of the largest producers of ammunition in the United States. They manufactured both traditional rounds such as shot shells and rifle bullets; as well ashypersonic energy rounds designed specifically for shooting down rockets or missiles!
Liberal, Kansas is a city in Adams County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers in Liberal were Germans who immigrated to the area in 1853. The town was named for General John A. Logan, an American general during the American Civil War who commanded a brigade of cavalry at Bull Run and other engagements. The town grew rapidly and by 1870 it had a school and five businesses including a grocery store and post office. In 1881 Liberal had also grown enough to incorporate as a city with its own government. Liberal experienced some growth following World War II asFort Riley closed down after the war and many soldiers moved into the city seeking jobs or housing. By 1960 Liberals had reached its current size with 11 businesses and 486 residents. After years of decline, liberal began to experience growth again in the late 1990s when developers started developing new properties near downtown; this led to more stores being opened up close to people and more business opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Liberal, Kansas was an American state from 1867 to 2008. Its capital and largest city was Topeka. The state covered a area of 6,362 square miles (19,844 km²) and had a population of over 13 million in 2007. It is the second most populous U.S. state after California. The first non-native English speaker to reside in Liberal was John Denton in 1821; he founded what became the town of Denton on the Arkansas River near present-day Wichita. The town's original name may have been derived from the French word "laborateur" meaning "worker." In 1825, when Kansas Territory was created, it included all present-day Kansas except for part of Nebraska west of the Platte River; Lecompton County formed part of that territory as well. Kansas' early history is clouded by controversy related to its admission into the Union as a new country following the Mexican–American War on April 16, 1846. On February 14, 1867, Kansas became one of 34 states admitted to the Union as part of the Compromise Of 1850 with voting rights given to African Americans only if they owned property worth $500 or less per year and paid taxes equal to those paid by white citizens; this provision put an end to slavery in America and helped preserve Great Britain's cotton empire in North America while creating something like a national identity for black Americans who had been living quarter-nations since before American independence. Kansas City is located on the southern border of Liberal along Interstate 35W and First Street South—just east of Topeka—and has been served by KCI Airport since 1923 when Topeka Municipal Airport opened adjacent to Carver Park Drive which forms much today's downtown area including Independence Mall (now known as MidtownKCI), two blocks south across I-35W from Main Street NW which now runs concurrent with First Street South between Second Avenue SW and Third Avenue SW
Liberal Kansas history can be traced back to the early 1800s when two groups of farmers, the Montrose settlers and the Douglas immigrants, began to move into the area. The first group of settlers were called Liberal and they were known for their pro-democratic values and a desire for open government. The second group of immigrants was called Douglas and they were more conservative in their values and believed in individualism. Eventually, both groups merged together to form the Liberal Party. In 1912, Republican nominee Franklin D. Roosevelt won control of the state government after winning a close race against incumbent Democrat James M. Buchanan. After World War II ended, Liberals continued to control the state government until 1960 when Republicans took over again.
