Lenexa, Kansas was founded in 1869 as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. With its location on the border of both Mexico and Texas, Lenexa quickly became known for its natural resources and hunting opportunities. The town's population grew rapidly during the late 1800s, and by 1910 it had reached 100,000 people. The town's growth continued through the early 1920s, but then came World War II. After the war ended, Lenexa experienced rapid growth again. In 2000, Lenexa became an incorporated city. Scopes first arrived in Lenexa in 1869 when George Cooke purchased land at what is now Second Street and Main Avenue. Cooke named his new found property "Lenexa" after his son-in-law, John Sibley (who also owned land near present day First Street and Main Avenue). The scopes were brought over from England by Captain James Fenton (the owner of a ship called "Cannonball") in 1870. Fenton sold them to local farmer Thaddeus Stevens for $275 each. Stevens used the scopes to hunt game in nearby forests and fields until he died in 1893. His wife kept most of the equipment including some 10 rifles that she turned into shotguns using their husbands' expertise as gunsmiths. In 1872, local blacksmith Willis Hodge started making telescopes out of cast iron with a mirror size of 50 inches or larger (focuser) to use for astronomical observation outside of Kansas City proper where large mirrors could be bought or leased from European observatories at this time (this was before American auspices placed restrictions on extraterrestrial visitation). By 1888 he had built three homes employing twelve workers total; these homes remain extant today as part of the Town Hall complex located near Third Street/Kansas Boulevard – one block north of current day First Street/Main Avenue). These home buildings are significant because they were not typical government buildings at this time which typically housed law enforcement officer barracks or other municipal services; instead these dwellings served as Workshops for Local Blacksmiths who manufactured various items such as firearms & tools used by farmers & scientists throughout Missouri & east Texas during this period (& afterwards), many items still extant today! These boundaries were drawn by surveyors during the early 20th century when it was determined that Lenexa would be one of two towns within Shawnee County—the other being Hutchinson—and that its growing population would necessitate separate government treatment.* Lenexa has always been an agricultural center with crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and cotton making up most of its economic activity since before World War II when oil production began coming to town* In recent years however there has been increasing emphasis on business development inside the City Limits which now include retail space for both local businesses as well as larger chain stores like Kohl's * *There have also been efforts made by some members of City Councilto annex land outside of City Limits into the Town Square* This annexation effort faces opposition from residents who feel they have given their consent to this type of growth while not having any say in what takes place within their own neighborhood
