When the first settlers arrived in Kansas in 1867, they had to find a place to live. The land was too wide and too empty for them to farm, so they decided to settle in small towns and villages. One of the first settlements in Lenexa was called Farnum. The residents of Farnum were farmers and their families who used rifles to hunt game and protect themselves from Indians. Rifle stocks history began here in Lenexa when two men, Hiram Sibley and William Hargrave, started a rifle company called the Second Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 7, 1868. This company served in the Union army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The Second Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment was disbanded after the war because it didn’t have enough soldiers to fight on both sides. However, Hiram Sibley continued his rifle company into the 1870s and 1880s because he liked shooting rifles so much! He started a new rifle company called the Third Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment which served until 1889. In that time period, rifle stocks history changed again because people wanted shotguns instead of rifles for hunting purposes. The first settler in Lenexa was James Daugherty who came from Ireland in 1857 with his family and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1874 two brothers named John Murphy started farming nearby and soon had five other families living hereabouts also tenant farmers sharingcropping cotton for three years until they moved their farm north to Pioneertown where they improved it into a large home that still stands today called "Murphy's Mount". In 1886 when batteries became available for local defense against Indian attacks during Waco Siege some people decided it would be nice if they too could have one so they pooled money and bought three 20-pound cannons which they placed under power lines outside their house between 1898-1899. When violence broke out inside town over who should get these cannons one side or another emerged with guns drawn won control of both sets of lines & pulled down all 3 cannon barrels leaving their homes without warning anyone only causing dinner guests at Murphy's Mount to run shouting into streets past angry mobs armed with pikes & swords! One account says: In 1908 when territory split off from Shawnee County due to population growth rates Unincorporated Shawnee County including present day Lenexas limits were created adjoining Clearwater just east ofpresent day Hutchinson along US Highway 169 about four miles north of downtown Wichita

A library opened in 1923 and soon became one of the most popular institutions in town with its wide selection of books and magazines. residents also enjoyed playing golf courses located throughout the community. The late 20th century saw some difficult times for Lenexa as a result of local politics and oil production near Wichita which led to social unrest among local citizens. However, by 2007 it had regained some much needed stability following ratification of an agreement between Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and SunocoPhillips Incorporated to phase out large-scale oil production within three years

The growth of both cities led to increased traffic congestion on the Arkansas River which required construction of a new bridge in 1907 that shortened travel time from Shawnee Mission to Lenexa from about two hours to less than one hour
