Lenexa is a city in Lawrence County, Kansas, United States. The population was 26,083 at the 2010 census. The Lenexa-Dodge City Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 47,126 as of the 2010 census. The first settler in Lenexa was David Dixon in 1847. The town site was surveyed in 1851 by John Hennepin and named for General Josiah Dodge who fought during the Mexican–American War. In 1858, the townsite was enlarged by annexing the unincorporated community of Westville to the east. Lenexa became an agricultural center due to its location on Wichita Road (now US Highway 64). A cotton gin and mill were built here between 1865 and 1870; both remain extant today. A post office called Lenexa was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1893, Jens Larsen founded what would become Lennar Corporation (later known as Sears Roebuck & Co.) Here he started his own lumberyard which soon became one of Lawrence County's leading businesses. In 1924, Lennar sold its interest in Sears Roebuck & Co., becoming part of Kmart Inc.. Today Kmart is one of America's largest retail conglomerates with over 1,000 stores throughout North America including several located inside Lenexa mall Additionally many small businesses operate within these larger stores providing employment to local residents . In 1965 American Express opened an Emeritus store here followed by Walmart affiliate Sam’s Club later that year . These two large retailers helped create what has come to be known as “the shopping district” around downtown Lenexa . Also during this time frame many smallerprises opened up along Wichita Rd making this area more vibrant with a near lack of chain retailers . Some examples include Midwestern Pizza Place which opened up next door to Sam’s Club back when Walmart didn’t exist , Red Roof Inn which resided across from American Express before being moved out onto Wichita Rd and reopened as Comfort Suites afterwards There are also numerous restaurants located within walking distance such as Chinese restaurant Zhennan Restaurant or Irish Pub which can accommodate large crowds

It grew to become a town in 1875 and remained that way until it became a city in 1907. The history of Lenexa can be traced back to when it was only an agricultural community known as "Lenexa Station." In 1854, the Santa Fe Railway arrived in Lenexa and began construction of its line from Wichita to Topeka. The railway's first stop was at Lenexa Station on the east side of town. To accommodate passengers coming from Wichita and other towns on the railroad, the station had two platforms with waiting rooms on either side of a four-foot-deep (1 m) platform between them. A train stopped at each platform for passengers to buy tickets before hittingched rides were available for those who could not or did not want to walk from one end of town to the other. In 1875, Lenexa incorporated as a city under the name "Lenexa." At first, it consisted primarily of rural properties within its boundaries; however, over time many businesses moved into downtown LenEXA from villages outside its borders. By 1907, however, most businesses within downtown had closed down due toldowns and lack of customers because of Prohibition – LenEXA therefore became known as "the City That Wasn't". However, despite this nickname being less than flattering given how much business actually still thrived inside its limits during prohibition period (particularly since most people living within downtown area anyway), downtown still remains one of the most vibrant areas within Leavenworth County today and is home to numerous cultural attractions including several theaters and museums along with restaurants and bars dating back centuries combined!
Lenexa, Kansas was founded in 1854 by George Armstrong Custer. The city was named for General James Lenox Shaw, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in the city was established on October 15, 1854. In 1870, the town of Lenexa became a city and it has since grown to over 100,000 residents.
