Lenexa is a small town in Kansas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Lenexa was founded on February 14, 1854, by wagon drivers and farmers from Missouri who were looking for a new home after being forced out of their homes during the American Civil War. The first post office in Lenexa opened on October 12, 1855. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a rail junction and easy access to markets in Topeka and Wichita. In 1870, Lenexa had 2 churches and 20 residents. By 1920, the population hadgrown to over 1,200 people and the town hall was built that year. The first school inLenexa was built in 1868 as a log cabin operated by Mrs Henson. A brick building replaced it in 1886 when a new school system was organized which included four schools: one for white children and three for African Americans In 1907, local entrepreneurs set up what became known as the "Lenexa Cotton Mills". This mill produced high-quality cotton products until it closed its doors in 1978 because of competition from more efficient mills around the country. The mill site is now occupied by an auto dealership called Lenox Automotive Group Incorporated.
