Lenexa, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. It is located in Lenexa Township. The first settlers in Lenexa were Jesse Hamm and his wife Rebecca. A post office called Lenexa was established in 1873, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1899. The community took its name from General George Armstrong Custer who fought during the American Civil War on the side of the Union. Lenexa was founded as a town by Fenton and Campbell households on May 9, 1907. They named their new settlement for General George Armstrong Custer who had died two days earlier while fighting with the 7th Cavalry Regiment near Coldwater Canyon outside Yankton Sioux Territory. Lenexa experienced some growth after World War II when manufacturing plants began to open up throughout Great Plains states such as Missouri and Illinois. In 1960, Lenexa became an incorporated city under Kansas law following a vote by its citizens to do so over concerns that they would be forced out of their rural location if they did not become part of a larger city. In 1998, Wichita-based Koch Industries announced that it would build a $500 million factory north of Lenexa which would create many jobs within the community but also impact nearby towns such as Midland and Olathe which rely on Koch's business activity for economic stability

Lenexa, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. Lenexa is one of the most prominent towns in Johnson County. The original Lenexa post office was established in 1867, and the present post office was established in 1907. Lenexa has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. In 1798, General James Wilkinson and his army invaded Indian Territory and founded St Louis to help defend that territory from British forces. He named the new settlement after his personal physician, Dr. Lenox who had accompanied him on the expedition. The first store in Lenexa opened on Main Street in 1867. It was operated by John Waddell and his brother-in-law Amos Crosby. A school started operation in 1870 but closed due to financial problems; it reopened under charter from the Kansas State Board of Education in 1872. One of the earliest businesses to open near what is now LenEXA was a bakery called "The German Bakery". It opened its doors on First Street just east of Highland Avenue about 1880-1881 when Otto Engelhard did business as an early grocer/bakery with automatic ovens which he installed himself (the first self-service grocery store west of Chicago). The bakery closed around 1902 because of competition from more modern stores; however local lore has it that Engelhard's son may have kept some operations going until 1906 when he sold out to Mr Sagerstrom who moved his assets into larger buildings across First Street at current day 7th & Highland Avenues - this structure still stands as one of LenEXA's most impressive reminders of early commercial activity hereabouts! In 1907, Wichita businessman J[ohn] F[rank] Dillingham offered five thousand dollars for a town site east of Wichita Falls; he selectedLenEXA over several other contenders because it had clear water access and existing residences were not required for development rights! Dillingham soon became known as "The Father Of The Town" for leading lenexaphiles throughout much or all of eastern Johnson County during its formative years - indeed many later mayors and governors including Orville Hyde (1924-29) hailed from DLingham territory including LBoyd (1925-27), Arthur Ashe (1930-33), Supplee Sul Ross (1945-) etc., even adding a second street designation - Second Avenue - within our limits since 1967 despite having no connection whatsoever with our namesake herein! Do you remember those huge trees near Nance Road outside OFallon? They used to be called 'The Girders'? That was back when farming continued right up around these parts even after everything got taken away by people buildin' freeways
