Lenexa, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Lenexa is part of the Topeka-Aurora metropolitan area. The first people to live in Lenexa were the Wichita Comanches and Kiowa Apache. They came from Texas in 1854 and founded Mission San Antonio de Padua on the east side of what is now Main Street in 1855. The first white settlers arrived in 1857 when John Davenport and his party crossed the Arkansas River into present-day Johnson County. John Davenport had come down from Illinois to find land for his family. He named his new settlement after Saint Leonard of Jerusalem (Lenox), which he had seen while traveling through Hungary some years earlier. Lenexa was platted on July 10, 1861 by Wm Henton with James Laughlin as its Mayor; it became a city on February 2, 1903. The post office at Lenexa been opened on November 6, 1865; it remained open until it was discontinued on December 12, 1907 due to mergers with other towns within the growing Topeka-Aurora metropolitan area. A large cotton gin and mill were built near present day Fourth Street and State Avenue in 1862 by Jno Coughlin; this facility continues as an industrial park operated by Midland Steel Corporation today. In 1865–1866, $5,-0 worth of gold coins were minted at Fort Kearney (now Cheyenne) northwest of Topeka by General George Armstrong Custer during their final campaign against Mexico before they entered Mexico into Ulysses S Grant's new Mexican War successes; these coins are known as "Custer's Gold". In 1893 religious services started taking place at First Presbyterian Church northeast of town center following Reverend Elisha Butterfield's sermon entitled "The Christmastide Visit." The first schoolhouse was built southeast of town center around 1870 by Mrs Mabel Storer Martin; this building still stands today across Main Street from Second Presbyterian Church where classes began that year too! Classes continued inside First Presbyterian Church until 1905 when a larger school building was erected which served students until 1955 when consolidation with nearby Osborne led to its closure because Osborne no longer offered private schools athletic programs like football or wrestling! The name change from Lenox to Topeka occurred because then–Governor Edwin Stanton wanted all towns within his newly createdTopeka-Aurora metropolitan area to have an equal voice when making decisions affecting their residents' communities including education, government services, commerce etcetera although not all local officials desired this level of autonomy so much as top administrators at Topeka City Hall who believed that having one community control all aspects would lead to unification and Efficiency within that community thereby promoting growth rather than stagnation or division among its constituent parts! After four decades under the same name but with very different functions (and lack thereof economy), voters ratified a referendum calling for changing the name back to Lenox effective January 1st 1959 via a ballot measure landslide victory margin!!! On July 26th 1974 tornado struck rural areas just north & west of town center killing dozens & injuring hundreds upon impacting homes causing extensive damage along US Highway 66 just south side main street next door destroying several businesses & damaging countless more structures making it one of history’s most devastating natural disasters ever!!!!
Lenexa, Kansas was founded on July 20, 1854, by George A. Smith and James S. Lenexa. The city was named in honor of General John Brown and his raid on the Kansas City Arsenal in 1856. The town began to grow rapidly after it was designated as the county seat of Hays County in 1857. In 1870, the first railroad reached Lenexa and the town became a cultural center for central Kansas. After statehood in 1907, Lenexa continued to grow as a center for education and industry. The city's population reached over 100,000 by 1930 and it remains one of the most populous towns in central Kansas today.
