Lenexa, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Lenexa was founded in 1881 by John Millington and others as a small village on the east side of the Missouri River. The post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1883. Lenexa grew rapidly after railroads arrived to serve the town in 1886 and 1889. In 1897, Lenexa became an incorporated city. In 1907, it annexed neighboring Haslett. The merger led to growth in both towns until World War II when Lenexa lost its city status and its dependence on railroad travel for economic development. However, during that time Lenexa experienced modest but steady growth due to its location within easy reach of Wichita and other major cities. By 2000, however, businesses had started moving away from LenEXA because of competition from Wichita's growing economy and lack of affordable housing; by 2006 only 2% of households lived within 1 mile (1 km) of downtown LenEXA while almost all other areas had declined below 10%. The loss of manufacturing jobs during the Great Recession has further impacted local economies with some businesses relocating back to LenEXA while others closed their doors altogether; overall there have been decreases in workforce size over time although population growth remains high (estimated at 9%). Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to revitalize downtown LenEXA through redevelopment projects such as a new library wing completed in 2015 which increased visitation rates by 50%, created more jobs than predicted especially among youth aged 16-29 years old who staged more job fairs then any other age group statewide across allOklahoma Counties between 2014-2015), renovation/addition to existing buildings along South Main Street which includes ground floor retail space for lease or rent with potential uses like event space or apartments overlooking Oreek Park followed by demolition/redevelopment totaling $30 million announced earlier this year including addition of 300 residential units currently under construction on 6 acres adjacent to Pinnacle Casino & Resort scheduled for ribbon cutting later this year
