The Lenexa Coal Company was founded in 1865 by John Smeaton and others as a means to transportation coal from mines in western Pennsylvania to market. The company became one of the largest coal companies in America, with mines in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Missouri; it employed over 100 people when it went bankrupt in 1892. A new company was organized on July 1, 1902 as an agricultural express freight carrier called Great Western Railway Service (GWR). In 1907 GWR merged with the Union Pacific Railroad to form the Chicago and Kansas City Railroad (CKC). The CKC served Lenexa until 1951 when it closed down due to competition from Interstate 70; today no traces remain of either company except for some abandoned mine land around town which still contains coal seams. Lenexa also saw significant growth during World War I due to military housing being built nearby for soldiers stationed at Fort Riley; however, much of this development stopped once hostilities ended and most troops returned home. Lenexa is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,532 at the 2010 census. The Lenexa-Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 11,554. The first people to live in what is now Lenexa were the Hennepin Creek and Shawnee mission Indians. They called the area "Lenexa." A post office was established at Lenexa in 1867, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. A train depot was built near present day Hutchinson on the line from Topeka to Wichita. It served as the town's only stop until 1955 when an interchange opened at Hutchison andominated for Hutchinson because of its larger size. The first school in Lenexa was a one room schoolhouse located on Main Street between Academy and First Streets. In 1870, addition pupils were taught by teachers from Topeka Public Schools while their parents attended worship services at Mission Indian School nearby also known as "The White Sands". On October 16th of that year, an act of the Kansas Legislature granted land north of Main Street to be annexed into Lenexa Township; this land included much of today's downtown area including most of Second Street eastward to through Third Avenue which became known as "Lenox Place." This annexation gave rise to some confusion since no vote ever took place on whether or not to name the new town after General Leonard Wood (1824-1915), who had fought under Grant during the American Civil War (1861-1865) before moving west to become commander of Fort Riley later that same year -� thus both towns would have been named after generals even though they did not actually share common ancestry! However local residents commonly shortened their street names such as "Lenox" or simply just "Len.") Another important event which occurred during this early time period was when settlers founded what is now Spring Hill about three miles east southeast of present day Lenexa on high ground overlooking Hutchinson Lake where they began building log cabins which would soon become iconic around these parts! In 1876, voters approved a plat for what would eventually become Plaza Towers; this plat included several blocks south of Allendale Road between Third and Fourth streets which are now home to many businesses including Gateway Mall & Applebees restaurant complex along with other commercial properties along that stretch currently used by Gardner Elementary School across from there too!. The original store fronts still remain standing today within walking distance from all business areas mentioned above including Gateway Mall! A second school opened for students in 1905 when East High School moved from its original location two miles northeast adjacent to US Highway 508 about two miles southwest of present day Hutchinson University Park for grades 7-12 following completion of USD $1 million bond campaign funded by then Governor John Altman! East High closed down shortly thereafter due largelyto lack Of enrollment however bricklayer contractor Wilburn Engineering Company continued working on new East High School campus construction until 1912 when it finally completed! The wellknown Wichita State University logo can be seen atop current Administration Building directly across First Street/USHSD propertyline prior To its recent demolition!! As America industrialized beginning around 1800 Steel production increased rapidly starting with smelting small amounts then turning big stocks into ingots then selling those ingots produced up through various stages making companies like Carnegie Steel Works Limited & Western Union Telegraph Company Limited very rich indeed!. Today steelmaking continues but more modestly with products such as pipe railing etc., producing jobs primarily within rural communities throughout Americas heartland
