According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 805 people residing within the town limits: 293 males and 326 females ages 15 or over (the median age was 41). There are 146 households of which 36% had children under the age of18 living with them, 48% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37% were non-families. 28% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 yearsof age or older. Lenexa, Kansas is a small town located in Shawnee County, Kansas. The population was 807 at the 2010 census. Lenexa was founded in 1867 and incorporated as a city in 1907. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. Lenexa was originally named Englishtown and later called Lenexa Vale because of the abundance of lead ore that could be found there. The first post office in Lenexa opened on February 14, 1865, and was known as Englishtown until it changed to Lenexa in 1907. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from Illinois during the late 1800s. They built log homes near the present day downtown area around 1867. In 1870, they platted what is now the core of Lenexa and named it after their native land England which they had left behind when they moved westward to Kansas Territory. The city of Lenexa grew quickly due to its location close to Leadville where coal and other minerals were mined for export. By 1908, there were over 1,500 residents living in Lenexa with an average household size of 2 people. In 1915, local businesses helped contribute $5,000 towards construction of a water tower which became one of the main attractions for visitors to the community during its early years. In 1924, then-Mayor John Hickey proposed that all citizens vote on whether or not they wanted annexation into Wichita County so that more money could be spent on infrastructure projects such as highway improvements and streetlights. Over 60% voted against annexation but it did happen due to pressure from Mayor Hickey who saw this as his chance to make some real changes within the community while he still had control over events and decisions affecting residents'. Since its incorporation into Wichita County in 1907,Len exA has been home to many different types of businesses including grocery stores (Cafeteria Supermarkets), department stores (JCPenney & Kmart), service stations ( ExxonMobil station ), factories (Ford Motor Company plant) ,and medical facilities (Our Lady Health Care). Lenexa was a small town in eastern Kansas Territory when the United States acquired it from Britain in 1854. As part of the Kansas Purchase, Lenexa became the seat of Shawneetown County. The population was 5,500 at its peak in 1860. decline through most of the 19th century; by 1880 it had shrunk to 3,000. In 1902, Lenexa became one of two towns in Shawneetown County that amalgamated with Leavenworth to create Wichita County.
