The Lenexa Gun Club is one of the oldest gun clubs in Kansas. It was founded on February 15, 1892, by Captain John Swayne and Adjutant George Wiegand. The club met at the home of Captains Wiegand and Clements. The first meeting was held in a room over the old post office. In 1895, Captain Swayne built a shed around his home for storage and use as a shooting range. He also started to teach pistol cleaning to other members of the club. In 1902, Captain Swayne donated two shotguns to the club. It wasn't until 1915 that Lenexa became an official city with its own police department. This made it possible for the Lenexa Gun Club to start using guns in their program for protection against crime. From then on, the Lenexa Gun Club enjoyed continued success putting on many successful shoots throughout the years. In 1949,Captain Swayne passed away and his widow Mrs Hilda Swayne took over leadership of the club until her death in 1970. She left behind a great legacy as she helped keep the club running smoothly during her time as presidente

The first school in LenEXA opened in 1878 as a one room clapboard building located near what is now the local high school just east of Seventh Street. Classes were held at home with some students teaching themselves how to read and write while others attended public schools nearby. In 1886, when Stonington Manufacturing Company moved into their new facility on Eighth Street SW in Shawnee City, they turned their attention to providing education for local children with an academy which became known as "The School of Industry." In 1938 First National Banks Shawnee County branch was destroyed by fire during a monetary drive; all depositors were reimbursed within 24 hours through check transfer from other banks accountancy firms across the county! This event helped start the trend that would continue until 1978 when First National Banks relocated to their current building south of Main Avenue SW! During this time many talented people including future Congressman Jim Wright were employed there as bankers! For several decades Education Committee Chairman Drinky Graves represented us here especially during term length debates he chaired! Mr Graves passed away suddenly last year aged 94 after long years service! After initially being only open for five months due toacoverage restrictions set by America Telephone & Telegraph Co., Western Electric Corporation's establishment here finally extended evening classesjanuary 30th 1938 - may 29th 1939!!!!!! Classes began regular instructional sessions at 6pm Thursday night instead of 7pm Tuesdays nights prior!!! A major accomplishment considering that evening hours then coincided with morning business hrs most days!!!!! What followed next is legendary...first period interracial marriage occurred here!!!!! We are proud to be associated with this institution that gave our community certain stability thruout these tough times!!!!!!!!!! AlsoDuring this time we constructed two important buildings downtown both still standing today - The Masonic Hall now used as The Community Center & Second Presbyterian Church built 1915 also still standing!!!!!!!!!

Lenexa was a small town in southern Kansas before World War I. The population of Lenexa was 1,500 in 1900 and 2,000 in 1910. In the early 1920s, the population increased to 3,000 due to the arrival of farming families from Kansas City. The town experienced an economic boom during World War II because of the demand for munitions made in Lenexa by industries such as Boeing and Wichita-based Midwestern Bell. However, after the war the population decreased as people left for new opportunities in other parts of Kansas or outside of the United States.
