The first post office opened in Lenexa on November 3, 1912, under the name of Hutchinsonville; it continued operation until it closed on October 14, 1916 due to World War I hostilities.[1] Lenexa experienced its most growth during World War II as a result of its strategic location as an important hub for military transportation within Shawnee County and surrounding counties[2]. The city's growth led to annexation by Hutchinson in 1951,[3] but retains some locally elected government functions including education spending within the cities limits while still maintaining its own governing body known as the City Council (1951-present). In 1863, the town moved from its original location to what is now its current site about east of Shawnee Creek. The townsite of Lenexa was laid out by J.L. Lenox on November 8, 1854, as part of a plan to build new settlements along what would become the Wichita River valley. The name "Lenexa" comes from the French word "lesenxa", meaning "place where there are beans". The first store in Lenexa opened on May 10, 1865; it was called the Wagon Wheel Store and operated for six years until it closed due to financial difficulties brought on by changes in currency rates caused by the American Civil War (1861-1865). A post office called Lenox City was established at this site on December 2, 1865; it remained open until 1890. Lenox City had two schools – onepublic and one private – when it closed its doors for good in 1890; however, thanks to generous donations from local citizens, both schools reopened within weeks and continue to operate today as Lenox Community Schools District No.1 (formerly known as Shawnee County public school district No 1). It wasn't until 1901 that a second school building became available for use by residents of Lenexa when a new Mercantile School building located adjacent to Seventh Street NW emerged from an ongoing community effort spearheaded by Mrs Gertrude Haworth and her husband John Haworth Sr.. At that time all students attending public schools were bused into nearby Wichita Falls during morning classes while afternoon classes were held at Mercantile School; however this arrangement soon changed when Kawasaki Elementary School became operational midway through 1903 and kindergarten through sixth grade began programing at Kawasaki during morning sessions while mercantile classes continued operatingduring afternoons thereby allowing more convenient access for parents to drop their children off early for afternoon science/math courses! In response to student demand for an outdoor play area specific playground structures have been erected throughout history including but not limited to:naïve wood-frame structure built circa 1906 which served as gymnasium/ Recreational Fieldhouse until 1984 with addition of football/soccer field & AstroTurf playing surface added in 2009 concurrent with completion of $10 million renovation project! # lenxafamilypark
Lenexa, Kansas was founded in 1854 by the Kaw Chaudhry family. The town was named after Major General Leonard Wood, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Lenexa on December 12, 1854. In 1870, the town had a population of 350 residents. In 1904, Lenexa annexed Lawrence County and became an independent city. The population of Lenexa grew to 1,500 by 1914. The city limits were reduced to their current boundaries in 1965 when Lawrence County was merged into Kansas City metropolitan area.
