Between 1908 and 1912, Arsenal Ammunition Co established itself in Lenexa with origins dating back to 1887 when George Armstrong Cannon founded Winchester Ammunition Co here in Topeka. This company made American-made ammunition for guns including revolvers, shotguns, machineguns (the Thompson submachinegun), artillery pieces (including anti-aircraft guns) and more! The late 1800s saw another boom period for firearms clothing production here in Lenexa when companies like Sears & Roebuck came along with new trends in design and color selection among others! The first store in Lenexa was established by Wm Sitton and Hyrum Brown from Illinois in 1865. A post office called Lenexa was established in 1867, and remained operational until it closed in 1907. Lenexa experienced its most significant development during World War II when many local businesses became involved with the military production industry. Many residents worked at Union Carbide plants near Olathe or Wichita Falls, Texas; Boeing factories outside Seattle; and other manufacturing locations across the country. The community changed hands several times during its history before becoming fully suburbanized after Interstate 35 (I-35) bypassed it in 1985. Today, many of Lenexa's original buildings remain standing including the Sitton Store which still stands as a historical landmark next to Main Street where early settlers gathered for their pioneer meetings
