In 1876 the local railroad built a depot here and soon there were industries such as shoeshine shops and cigar stores located near where present day First Baptist Church (built 1913) stands on Main Street. The population of Lenexa began to grow rapidly due to its convenient location, good schools, easy access to transportation (roads led into town), as well as nearby towns that grew up around it like Overland Park and Shawnee Mission which all joined forces during the late 19th century to form what is now Wichita Falls metropolitan area. During World War II many businesses closed down due to rationing but those that survived were able to reopen thanks to government support programs such as Allied Victory Relief which provided money for buy goods necessary for war production not just domestically but also abroad including munitions plants throughout Europe so industry could continue even while people were away fighting overseas; this program continued through 1945 when war ended. In 1909 Mayor John Hynes recommended that lenexa annex neighboring rural communities of Deadwood (northwest), Glencoe (southwest), Wellington (southeast) and Linn Grove (northeast). These annexation proposals were accepted with amendments resulting in Lenexa having annexed 416 acres (18 km²) of land from those five villages combined with 286 acres (11 km²) from Stillwater village annexed back on October 3rd 1912 creating what is now known as Lennox Township
Lenexa was founded in 1867 as a post office on the east side of the Kansas River. It became an incorporated city in 1907. The population of Lenexa peaked at 452 in 1920, but has since declined to around 350 today.
