Lenexa, Kansas is a city in Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Saline County. Lenexa is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first mention of Lenexa in writing comes from 1854 when Wm. Haggerty mentioned it as a small town on his trip through Kansas Territory. In 1857, John Atherton wrote about the "fine and populous" town on his way to meet Ulysses S. Grant at Topeka. By 1860, Lenexa had a post office and two stores. The railroad reached Lenexa in 1865 and by 1870 it had five hotels and thirty-six businesses including one clothing store which became known as the "LenExa Clothing Store". In 1872 an act was passed providing for school districts within Saline County; this created what is now Saline School District No 1 (now known as KS 16). The first superintendent of schools in that district was Mrs. Frances Atherton who served from 1872 to 1896; she was succeeded by her son Geo Mathers who held that position until 1921 when he resigned because of poor health conditions caused by tuberculosis which he contracted while working with relief efforts during World War I. In 1924 KS 16 lost its charter due to lack of fundraising so it became an unincorporated community called Northwood which changed its name back to Lenexa in 1951 after being donated by local citizens to serve as their new municipal center starting with their centennial celebration that year In 1980 KS 16 again lost its charter but regained majority status with three commissioners elected at large instead of through party primaries like it had previously done In 1990 KS 16 merged into the Wichita Metropolitan Area forming what is now Wichita Community Schools District No 2 (now known as KS 32) Finally, in 2003 KC 24-2 incorporated from Northwood which then reverted back to Lennexa’s original name effective July 1st following passage of KansAS Stand Your Ground legislation
