The first Europeans to visit the area were traders from St. Louis in 1836 and 1837 who named it "Natchez." A post office was established in 1840, and by 1846, Leawood had a population of 350. In 1862, the townsite of Leawood was acquired by Wichita for $2 per acre ($/acre). On October 15, 1865, Wichita's first courthouse opened with 10 jurors. The town's name changed to Leawood on July 1, 1886 after incumbent Mayor John C. Richardson successfully lobbied for it during a City Council meeting that year. In 1917-1918 Leawood Elementary School District No. 2 built an addition to its west side which became known as "The Towers". The original structure was a two-story wood frame building which held up to 40 students grades K-12th grade using classrooms on each floor and a central hall with auditoriums on each wing which could seat 150 people or more when filled to capacity; however due to increasing enrollment over time (and later ADD school annexions), the original structure rapidly began becoming too small and inadequate for the needs of the district's growing student body (it remained until demolished in 2002). On July 1st 1888 Wichita annexed Garden City Township forming one municipality form 4 Townships: Garden City eastward including parts of Leawood until annexation into Wichita; North Park northward including parts of Garden City eastward until annexation into Wichita; South Park southward including parts of Garden City southward until annexation into Wichita; all other territory lying east thereof excepting that now included within city limits - making LeawOOD municipally consisting only of itself remaining unincorporated territory? This change not only increased municipal responsibilities but also made possible overall governing budget efficiencies because no money ever stayed within city limits once outside boundaries were brought within city limits - this process continues even today as annexed territory enter into city limits via zoning changes without prior approval from thenCity Manager! At that time, the area was part of Shawnee Mission District and had an estimated population of 2,500 people. However, due to the railroad being built through the area and other factors, the population only grew to around 1,500 by 1900. By 1910 however, the population had reached 2,711 residents which made it one of the largest towns in Riley County at that time. Over the years there have been many changes to Leawood. In 1955 it became a city and has seen growth ever since. In 1990 it also merged with neighbouring town Ofalla and became one single municipality again under its current name of Leawood-Ofalla City Limits Incorporated (LOKI). Over time this municipality has continued to grow; as of 2018 their municipal size stands at 469 citizens!
