Leawood is a small city in Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1867 by the merger of two small towns on the banks of the Missouri River. Leawood has a population of about 33,000 people as of 2019. The city is located in Douglas County and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was named for General James Leavenworth, an American general who served in the Mexican-American War and subsequent campaigns against Native Americans. In 1868, Leavenworth's widow donated land to build a school and community center. The first post office opened in 1870; at its peak, the town had a population of about 200 people. By 1888, however, Leawwood's population had dwindled to about 10 people due to factors such as decline in agricultural production and increasing settlement by Germans and other Europeans. In 1892, Congress passed the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed Kansas' statehood status and placed Nebraska within Indiana Territory instead. This caused Great Britain to annex Manitoba from Canada while also creating new states west of Ohio including Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma). As a result of this change in government, many citizens living east of Omaha moved westward into what is now Douglas County – including most residents of Leawood – as part of their attempt to gain statehood for their region. This migration led to an increase in population density within what is now Douglas County; as a result, businesses began opening up outside of downtown Leawood which helped spur growth within the city limits over time. On July 9th 1905 local farmers organized themselves into Agrarian Organizations (AO) to curtail large-scaleoutsourcing agriculture that had become rampant during that decade thanks to improved transportation methods and cheap labor from Mexico through Federation Fields near Topeka - resulting not only from growingUS Census data but also particularKansas Landowner Lobbyist interests during early 20th century Agrarian movements), seekingNAFTACooperation . . . However - rather than joining forces with neighboring cities like Lawrence or Shawnee - many AO members chose insteadto establish satellite communities around major markets - chiefly Topeka [and nearby Hutchinson], KS."
