Leawood was a small town in Kansas until the early 1800s. It was located on the east side of Leawood, about six miles from the present day city of Wichita. The first settler in Leawood was James Hutton. He and his family moved to the area in 1848. By 1860, there were only 10 residents living in Leawood. during that time, businesses within the town were mainly agricultural. In 1873, a school was built in Leawood and it served as the primary school for many years until Wichita opened its own school system in 1909. The first post office in Leawood was established on April 1, 1868. The town had one store and two blacksmiths at that time. In 1875, a water main went into operation through what is now downtown Wichita and local residents started using it to water their gardens instead of relying on wells which were often contaminated by lead and other toxins. In 1890, an electric substation was established in Leawoad and it became one of the first public electric systems in Kansas City area. That same year saw the opening of a grocery store within town limits by J C White which quickly became known as "the Super Store." A fire destroyed most of what remained of downtown Wichita on October 16th, 1907 which left much ofLeawOOD abandoned until 1915 when new development began taking form around what is now Main Street NW with newer buildings added over time
