Leawood is a small town located in Butler County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first settlement in Leawood was made on July 4, 1854 by John A. Strickland and his family from Illinois. The town was named for James M. Leach who served as surveyor general for Butler County in the 1850s and 1860s. The community of Leawood was platted on December 12, 1858, by Wm Hays and Jno McNair with a land grant from the US Government. On October 2, 1865, the village of Leawood incorporated as a city under the name of "Leawood." The City Council adopted resolutions authorizing annexation to Topeka on November 5th following a referendum vote by its citizens. Topeka incorporation occurred on November 15th 1870 pursuant to an act of the Kansas Legislature approved December 10th that year which granted city status to all incorporated towns within Butler and Dodge Counties along with an exemption for Leawood which remained unincorporated until it joined Topeka in 1870. In 1907–1908 residents of Wichita organized what became Wichita State University; this event helped spur development around Wichita Falls (the current location) about 100 miles east-northeastward along I-35W and then northward along I-40 to serve as an eastern gateway into Wichita State's expandingcampus area across three counties including Douglas, Atchison and Shawnee where many new businesses were established during these years such as PepsiCola Bottling Co., Schwenker’s grocery store et al . In 1941 Wichita State erected its first major building – now known as Sigma Pi fraternity house –on Tomahawk Drive adjacent to Main Street near what is now Central Middle School . With World War II raging throughout much of America students at Wichita State had few opportunities or resources to assist their war effort save for providing food parcels directly to military troops stationed overseas . However upon cessation of hostilities student groups rapidly rallied around repairing downed planes/trucks/houses etcetera with proceeds going back into university coffers through various programs such as scholarships funds given out annually since 1919 In 1969 Kipling Award winning author Rudyard Kipling moved permanently from England to live among Indian people at reservation near Bowmore Lake in North Dakota after being expelled from Oxford University over his outspoken support for Indian independence movements there In 1993 construction began on what will become Science Museum Of Kansas - one of only a few museums nationally designated as "open air" museums allowing public access without barriers or security measures
