Leawood is a town in Adams County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The name Leawood is from the Shawnee word lee-wahd meaning "place of green corn." The first settler in what became Leawood was J.M. French in 1857. Englishman George Stephenson and his family arrived in 1859 and started a sawmill here. A post office was established at Leewood on March 12, 1860, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907. In 1886 a millrace passed through the town and water Wheels were introduced to Leawood by James Hargrave who built a hotel on the edge of the millrace where he now stands. A grocery store was built opposite the US Army depot (now an old home) around 1896-97 by Wm.[?] Pugh which remains standing today as part of First National Bank building #1. In 1897 John Dickson organized a school district that included parts of Adams County including present day Leawood Township; this school district continued until consolidation with Wichita Falls School District in 1923 . In 1905 trade center development began with construction of what became known as "The Old Mill" by local citizens (the current Masonic Temple complex). By 1911 over 100 businesses had been erected within two blocks of Main Street including three banks, several groceries, two bars/restaurants, five clothing stores etc.; this boom only lasted for about fifteen years before Panic Investing struck hard during World War I and prices slumped again . This lack of stability caused many businesses to close during those difficult years making it very difficult for small towns to keep up with larger cities; however residents have kept The Old Mill open as an active business center ever since! After World War II more shopsopened but few remain today due to redevelopment or closure; most notably KFC which moved out after thirty years!

Leawood is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, located on the eastern edge of the Wichita metropolitan area. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Wichita-Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area since 2013. The first permanent settler in Leawood was Lorenzo Hayden who arrived in 1854 and built a log cabin near what is now Market Street. In 1855, Pomeroy and cached meat from his trip to Council Bluffs helped start the town's first business - a clothier named John Pomeroy & Brothers. The first school was founded by Mrs. Jane White in 1857; it was called "the Female School" because it only taught girls until 1861 when an all-male school opened which became known as "The Male School". In 1865, Leawood had 10 residents and $1,000 worth of property valuation. The Knob Creek Faultline caused significant damage to the town during 1886-1887 when a severe typhoon destroyed many homes and businesses including nearby Mayfield and Hennepin counties; much of what remained of Leawood after that storm can still be seen today as evidence of physical damage experienced by this community following such an event. During World War II, Leawood played host to several Army Air Forces training fields including Topeka's Beechcraft Training Center (now Mid-America Airport) which operated from 1941 to 1945 and then again from 1951 to 1957; these facilities were used for pilots training for fighter combat operations over Europe and North America before being replaced by more advanced airfields in later years. A munitions plant also operated out of Leawwood during World War II manufacturing munitions such as gasoline bombs (1942), incendiary bombs (1943), shells (1945), torpedoes (1946), anti-aircraft artillery rounds (1948) - all made using slave labor sourced from African Americans working on sites around Wichita while white workers worked elsewhere in Kansas City or other areas within Missouri nonstop throughout the war years making munitions for Japanese forces fighting American troops overseas while also contributing their labor power towards helping build Churchill Dam on Murphysboro Lake which served as one central axis for water supplies for both military units operating in WWII across multiple zones across multiple countries with greatly increased efficiency due to efficient distribution systems brought about through advances in engineering during World War II
