Leawood, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The townsite of Leawood was laid out in 1856 by Samuel Smith and James Hays, both residents of Topeka. The first post office in Leawood was established on July 6, 1857. It was renamed to its present name in 1881. In 1907 the community merged with Newton and other nearby towns to form the Wichita metropolitan area. In 1850 George Prentice built a sawmill and trading post on the bluffs above what is now downtown Leawood. By 1860 there were ten buildings in town; by 1870 there were twenty-one businesses and over one hundred people living hereabouts. Cuttings for building walls, rails for wagon roads and lumber arrived from California during this time as well as corn from Illinoisan farmers who had settled near Wichita Falls on the Arkansas River. Lumberjacks worked at this mill until it closed in 1902 due to intense competition from more efficient mills west of Cheyenne (the city then known as Topeka). A new mill started up around 1906 but soon went bankrupt because of bad management; it was finally closed down in 1922 after being abandoned for years without any replacement plan or equipment being brought up to date! In 1905 Isaac Noyes opened a grocery store at 7th and Broadway which became an important center for local commerce until it burned down in 1954! A new grocery store opened up on 8th Street SW in 1955 and became known as "Leawood's" supermarket until that structure fire also burned down in 2006! In 1958–1959 construction began on what would become Wichita State University; today WSU occupies much of downtown LeawOOD including most of the original buildings erected between 1850-1858! The school grew rapidly during its early years with enrollment reaching 10% by 1900!!! Today WSU has over 3900 students enrolled making it one of America’s most highly ranked universities! Most recently WSU constructed an annex onto campus called “Downtown LEAWOOD” which provides housing/accommodation for many students both undergraduate and graduate level!!! This redevelopment project cost $240 million dollars & will provide 300+ sqft./pwr total indoor & outdoor space!!!
