Leawood, Kansas is a town in Hays County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Leawood was established on December 4, 1872. It was discontinued on March 15, 1907. Leawood is located at (38.534939,-95.034689). The towns of Leawood and Commerce were consolidated into one town by an act of the Kansas Legislature on February 12, 1906. The merger resulted from a dispute between the two towns over land ownership. Leawood is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Hays County and one of the few remaining communities west of Wichita that developed prior to Wichita's growth into a major city in the early 20th century. The earliest settlers arrived in 1872 when General James Butler led a party of wagoners to travel through what is now Hays County searching for land to settle which he hoped would be part of his new Mexico Land purchase. When they reached Fort Riley they found it empty and decided to continue their journey eastward instead so they could find another route back home should their efforts fail. They eventually arrived at what is now Leawood on December 4th and started building houses together with help from local farmers who had also come down fromKansas City to help them out during this early years of settlement in what would become known as "the Prairie Town". A post office called "LeawOOD" was established at this location on December 4th, 1872 by order of Governor John Atherton. However, due to high postage rates set by Congress at that time mail delivery only took place twice per week so this office failed to make much impact until after January 1st 1875 when Wyoming became states within America and began providing mail service direct from Cheyenne River Ferry transporting goods upriver along Missouri River valley which relieved some postal pressure from eastern cities like Chicago & New York City which were experiencing heavy traffic due to opening of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1860a period commonly referred to as "the Gilded Age". On July 9th 1902 a fire destroyed most all but 3 buildings within village limits including the courthouse where residents gathered for court proceedings before either leaving or going inside for safety reason following an attack by two cows on local man named Harry Smart who lived nearby having confinement since 1800s because he refused patent infringement suits brought against him by railroad companies

Leawood was a small town in Kansas until the early 1900s. It was located on the east side of Leawood Lake, about 20 miles west of Wichita. The town was founded by farmers in 1858 and grew rapidly due to its location and good agricultural soil. In 1892, the first school in Leawood opened and soon became a popular educational center for students in eastern Kansas. By 1920, Leawood had over 100 residents and was one of the most important towns in southeastern Kansas. In 1923,Leawood became a city and retains its status as a community rich with history today.
