Leawood is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1881 by men from Leavenworth, Kansas who had come to the area for land speculation. The settlement became known as "Leawood" after the then-unnamed mountain range east of the town. In 1907, a post office was established at Leawood and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1926, Leawood incorporated as a village and continued to function as such until its annexation by Wichita in 1957. When Wichita annexed all of Shawnee County, including Leawood, it merged with the other villages within Wichita to form a new city government under which all Village residents were automatically accorded city rights and voting privileges. With this change in government status, Leawood became an official city within Wichita limits and maintain its own police department and fire department today despite having no resident mayor or councilmember. The original inhabitants of what is now LeawOOD were Indian people who lived on the Ridgeback Indian Reservation east of town when white settlers first arrived there in 1881-1882 during cattle drives that took place near present day Topeka & Jenks Oklahoma Territory during President James Kansa's War with Mexico This area now includes parts of Shawnee County including portions of towns like Overland Park and Olathe In 1927 local citizens organized their own militia unit known as The Shielded League Against Evil 2nd edn which helped protect their community from bandits/crooks active throughout much of that decade similar movements had been started before but never fully realized due to lack of resources or leadership
Leawood was founded in 1846 by James Leavenworth and his wife Rebecca. The town was named for the Battle of Leavenworth, which took place on April 14, 1846. The battle happened when American forces were fighting an attempted invasion of Mexico by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The first store in town was built on Main Street. In 1870, a post office was established in the town. In 1872, a school was opened in the town and remained open until it closed in 1916. In 1907, a railroad station was built in Leawood and served the community until it closed in 1960. In 1948, the United States Postal Service began service to Leawood with a mail truck. In 1955, a new high school was built in Leawood and remains open today as Wellesley High School.
