Leawood is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the Wichita metropolitan area, and is also the economic center of northeastern Wichita County. The name "Leawood" was given to it by General George Custer during his 1874 campaign for president of Kansas. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Leawood were French traders in 1679. In 1824, General James Kuehl led a military expedition against the Apache Indians and discovered an Indian village on the banks of Clear Creek near present-day Leawood. The Kuehls named this place after their friend Louis de la Vallière, Count de La Rochefoucauld (1680-1746), who had been with them on that Expedition. In 1868, Leawood was founded as a post office by Colonel John Dibble and Captain Fenton Shurtleff with mail service from Council Groveway (now Guthrie). It grew rapidly as a cattle station and railroad town; by 1870 it had a population of 684 people. In 1872, Leawwood became part of Dodge City when that city was incorporated; Dodge City remained its primary commercial center until after World War II when Wichita took over that role. On November 3, 1907, Leawood's incorporation as an independent city provided impetus for its erection of a municipal building—the first in Wichita County—and soon thereafter for its construction of roads and other public works necessary to support its growth: such as sewers and streets (later beautified with brick piers), water systems, schools (including two high schools), churches (including one Episcopal church built on land donated by Mrs. Lillian Swartz) and nightlife venues like Crazy Horse Saloon & Casino which opened in 1910 under then-Mayor Lucius Bemis Miller. During World War I 1918-1919 efforts were made to form an all-Kansas volunteer militia corps known as "The Leagueists." On December 7th 1919 Mayor Miller addressed assembled citizens at Municipal Auditorium urging them to join forces "...in order that we may be numbered among those who have taken up arms against Germany." This call inspired similar calls throughout much of Oklahoma Territory prior to statehood; however no formal organization materialized until April 1920 when the Oklahoma National Guard Infantry Brigade was activated at McAlester Army Air Field northwest of Tulsa being commanded by Major General Wm Halsey Thomas headquartered at McAlester AFB until July 1st 1925 when he assumed command from MajorGeneral Leonard Wood MacArthur due to medical reasons only days before his death; he was succeeded thereafter by Lieutenant Colonel Clarence King McCloskey effective September 15th 1925 . On October 14th 1926 local businessman J P Weldon put together $10 000 towards purchasing equipment needed for Wichita's civic hall which would become home later renamed 'Municipal Auditorium'. On November 2nd 1927 Mayor Miller dedicated Municipal Auditorium with full bandstand entertainment including orchestras conducted by Professor Charles Sibley Gardner... later renamed Carnegie Hall following donation from Andrew Carnegie himself thirty years later A popular annual event during this time honored heroism or sacrifice during World War I veteran boom - Veterans Day - typically held on November 11th every year since 1907

Leawood is a town in Kansas, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leawood County. The first residents of what would become Leawood were farmers and their families who began to arrive in the area around 1871. The early settlers were drawn by a fertile land and good water supply that was available for farming near Wichita. By 1890, Leawood had a population of 350 people. It became an incorporated town on February 17, 1912. On November 3, 1916, it joined the United States as part of territorial Kansas under President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal program. In 1948, Leawood became one of thirteen communities located within the new Wichita metropolitan area which was created when Wichita and other cities annexed much of east-central Kansas into its jurisdiction during the last years of World War II as part of Project Weisman. This move helped create what is now known as Wichita’s “inner city” with many African Americans living in close proximity to white residents while still enjoying some degree of economic opportunity and civil rights access unique to black citizens outside Watts or Harlem on Long Island City in New York City

However, during the late 1990s and 2000s leewood began to lose some of its prominence as a commercial center.
