It lies on the eastern edge of the Wichita metropolitan area and is bordered to the north by Kansas City and to the east by Overland Park. The early history of Leawood is unknown but it likely began as a wagon stop on the route between Wichita and Topeka. In 1837, Lecompton Township was formed from part of Shawnee County and Leawood became its capital. The first school in Leawood was built in 1838. A post office was established at Leawood in 1846 and remained in operation until 1913. During World War II, LeawOOD served as an important military base forthe United States Army Air Forces during Operation Crossroads which aimed to supply Nazi Germany with weapons and equipment necessary for its war effort against America. After the war, many businesses were founded in downtown Leawood including Kwik-E-Mart (now Walmart), Burger King, Tim Hortons hockey arena (now home to H-E-B), Pioneer Cabinets (later Home Depot) and more. Leawood was a small town located in northwest Kansas in 1863. It was founded by the Leavenworth, Kansas Territorial Legislature on May 1, 1861 as the first settlement in what would become the Wichita County region. The town's namesake, Elijah Woodworth, donated land for a new courthouse and schoolhouse. The post office at Leawood was established on July 5, 1866. The first store opened in 1868 and remained open until it closed in 1922. A cotton gin and mill were built here in 1872-1873; they were destroyed by a fire in 1924. A woolen mill was built here between 1886 and 1889; it ceased operation after one year due to financial troubles. In 1907-1908, Leawood became an important center of agricultural production thanks to its location near the Arkansas River floodplain. Many large landowners here grew corn, beans, wheat and other crops while also manufacturing items such as shoes, hats and toys; some even manufactured their own turbines to power their mills. However, following World War I the local economy slowed down due to increased competition from larger towns across the state. The last commercial crop grown at Leawood was corn around 1938; however, some smaller farms still continue to produce fruit trees there today ( primarily apples). In recent years much attention has been given to efforts to clean up downtown Leawood which has seen revitalization over the past few years spurred by plans for a new mixed-use development called "Leawood Live".
