The first settlement in what is now Leawood was made by two men, John P. Bemis and Hiram Maxim, on March 12, 1858. They named their new town after General George Armstrong Custer's hometown of Lewiston in Maine. A post office was established at Leawood on April 15, 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 1, 1907. In 1859 the county seat of Sedgwick County moved from Hutchinson to Leawood. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Leewood served as one of three Union military posts between Fort Riley and Topeka. On February 14 1862 Maj.-Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Union forces in central Kansas to move southward towards Wichita under orders to capture that city before Confederate forces could reinforce it and mount an attack against Grant's army advancing toward Springfield Illinois via the Wichita River valley. At daylight on February 17th several thousand soldiers under Brigadier General Nathaniel Banks attacked a small detachment of Confederate cavalry led by Colonel James Ewing near present day Keystone Lake while they were eating breakfast across from Bemis' store; this attack successfully disrupted Confederate plans for an coordinated assault upon Grant's army moving through central Kansas.. On May 4 1861 when Abraham Lincoln was elected President he nominated Rear Admiral David Farragut to be Secretary of Navy; Farragut had been Vice Admiral of the Navy during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848).
