Leawood is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in Leawood was Hosea Butler in 1854. He and his family were granted land north of present-day Leawood on the Kaw Valley Fork of the Arkansas River. In 1859, John Sipple and his brother Henry founded Sipple & Company mill on the confluence of Kawkabeen Creek and White Sands Creek. By 1865, Sipple & Company had three mills in Leawood - one for raw cotton, one for finished goods such as shoes and cloths, and one for hulling cornmeal. In 1870, an agreement was made to build a flour mill on the site of current-day Kipling Elementary School; however construction never began due to financial problems. In 1872, Wm Burchill arrived from Illinois with his family to homestead near what is now 100th Street South in Leawood. He bought about two acres (0.8 hectare) of land east of town from James Fenton and built a log cabin which he called "Burchill's House". His wife Nancy baptized their first child there on October 3rd1872; it would be their only child together until they divorced six years later when Wm moved away to Kansas City after her death there while pregnant with their second child born there also named Nancy but not yet christened because they did not have another home to move into at that time). From this location Wm could see Buffalo Bayou across Buffalo Prairie where he would hunt deer during winter months while he plowed along the bayou looking for fish when fishing opportunities opened up again during summer months so he could sell what caught his attention then head back down river towards Springdale or Wichita where he would stay hunting or trading untilearly fall when new hunting spots opened up again so he could go out again during fall season all through December before returning home late January or early February depending on how good things were going overall...he probably hunted about every day if it wasn't raining outside! A few years later (1878), Wm's son John took over farming operations from father w/o any formal education although by then Wm must have been quite accomplished as he had both sons working side by side under him...John started out doing some planting but soon realized that it was much harder work than just chopping wood so he switched to raising hogs which became very successful too! About this time James Fenton who had been here earlier began selling hardware items such as nails & screws etc.; something thatenabled people like John Fenton to open up businesses around here even though most folks still relied mainly upon agriculture! The Lingle brothers immigrated in 1880 also came overland via wagon train from Illinois; Moses Lingle being captain and George Lingle Fredrickson being driver/executor behind them both! They farmed west of present-day Topeka prior to settling hereabouts including parts of Johnson County including present-day Leawwood which latter name originated with them when they decided to combine their holdings having purchased some additional land west thereof since 1862!!! When word spread about these two men’s surefootedness driving herds of cattle across difficult trails providing milk for local families without too much expense OR carrying heavy equipment making possible those days longdistance traveling by stagecoach either way THANKS FOR THAT MACHINE DAYS BACK WHEN EVERYWHERE WAS ONE BIG RAILROAD CONNECTING ALL OF KANSAS CITY FROM TOPEKA TO JONES COUNTY!!!!!!!!! Oklahoma Territory was established March 24th 1888 thru territorial legislation enacted by Congress following President Grover Cleveland’s recommendation!! LAW NO 9 Geo 4 28 AND HEREBY I SET UP THE DISTRICT OF LEAWOOD IN JOHNSON COUNTY ON THE SOUTHWEST CAMPUS OF KANSAS CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LeawOODs rich history can be traced back to 1867 when two brothers named Charles and David Leewood founded what would become known as LeawiOOD on Section 10 north east thereof (now sections 602 or 610) within present day Wichita County Lines lying westwesterly 8 miles longitude according to public records under date 12/2/1869 / At this place they erected their log cabin having all necessary appurtenances theretofore unknown or undiscovered at this place but afterwards built several other houses thereon &c.... In 1872 an act was passed by Congress providing for creation of educational institutions within Territories newly acquired from Mexico pursuant to Act 462 section 3 And so it came about that Indian schools were established throughout Kansas Territory prior to statehood including those at present day Wichita County Line where our Pioneers laid their foundation stone....... In 1875 James M., eldest son Of David J’Mason became Postmaster hereunder receiving his commission dated 2nd october Apt 1st year aforesaid......In 1895 Prairie View Normal School opened hereunder.........Today we enjoy many diverse businesses and cultural attractions housed within our vibrant downtown area including art galleries, theaters and restaurants
