Leawood is located on the edge of a mesa and on the banks of the Arkansas River near its confluence with the Little Arkansas River. The first settler in Leawood was J.F. Cheney in 1873. In 1892, Harry Hinton became owner/operator of the local bank which led to an increase in business and more people coming to live in town; these days there are only a few remaining residents from those early days! In 1905, whenCowleyCounty was organized into districts within Kansas statehood under President Theodore Roosevelt’s New Deal program, Leawood became one of several newly administered towns within District number 6B – that included Dodge City (now Independence), Topeka (now Topeka), Neosho Falls ( now non-profit Shawnee Mission Community School District No.(7)), Garden City ( now Garden City Hills) and Ottawa Heights (now Ottawa Hills)). With this growth came new shopping areas developed adjacent to town center with numerous small stores catering to general consumer needs such as groceries, hardware and appliances along with clothing stores specialized in departmental items such as housewares or bedroom sets etcetera; these days it’s hard not to find something unique or interesting inside any one of those newer shopping areas! Lillie Wills also founded The History Museum of Kansas in 1993 which still operates as a museum today with exhibits on local history and culture. In addition to its tourist attractions such as its historic grocery store and museum, Leawood has been known for its agricultural production since before pioneer times. One significant industry that has grown around Leawood over time is agriculture; there are now dozens of businesses located here involved in various aspects of agriculture including commercial farming, research & development activities, processing/packaging/transportation services, food production (including livestock), and tourism (particularly sun-drenched sandy beaches). Some of these businesses were established during prohibition years when liquor sales were banned within Johnson County; many remain active currently despite this period-defining restriction on business growth.
