In 1892, the AMDC merged with George Biddle & Co., a firearms wholesaler. As a result of this merger, Leawood became one of the largest gun factories in America. In 1924, the AMDC merged with Henry Repeating Arms Company to form Remington Arms Corporation. This company produced handguns and shotguns as well as military rifles and artillery pieces.

It was founded in 1867 by citizens of Shawnee County and named for a Creek word meaning "place where the wheat groweth." The first store in Leawood was built on Main Street in 1872. In 1881, the town changed its name to Leawood after Major General John A. Logan, who fought with Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and later served as Governor of Kansas. The town was platted on December 10, 1867 when settlers from Shawnee County arrived in what is now Johnson County. The first post office was established at Leawood on March 17, 1870; it remained open until May 2, 1886. In 1881, the town changed its name to honor Major General John A. Logan following his victory at Perryville over Confederate forces under General Robert E Battlefield In 1893 an oil well was drilled near present-day Leawood and production began soon afterwards; this led to increased traffic to the small community and helped make it one of the most important oil towns in America during that time period. By 1907 there were over 100 businesses operating within Leawood boundaries including 12 banks and 30 grocery stores; also numerous hotels were erected throughout the early 20th century due to heavy industry growth at nearby Wichita Falls and Fort Worth oilfields
