Frantz and named for Leavenworth, Kansas, which then served as its easternmost settlement. Grant's presidency. The city had a population of only 1,100 when it became the county seat in 1889. The increase was due largely to two factors: World War I and the dramatic rise in agricultural production spurred by new irrigation systems developed in response to army advances during that war; and Leawood becoming one of several major manufacturing centers during this era (along with Wichita) that helped create what has come to be known as "Kansas City America." During World War II much of downtown area was destroyed or damaged by bombing raids; however, many buildings remain extant today including fraternal organizations' headquarters on Foster Avenue (now part of Hastings Mall). Today Leawood continues its rapid growth with over 40% growth since 2000 alone – making it one of Kansas City's fastest-growing cities overall!
