Leawood, Kansas is located in the U.S. state of Kansas and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The population was 153,811 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Wichita County. Leawood is also the county seat of Wichita County. The official name for Leawood was "Lawn Valley" until 1887 when it became known as "Leawood." The city website states that its namesake is an 1881 photograph of a pastoral landscape with trees in the foreground taken by Edward Condon while he was working on a cattle drive from Dodge City to Topeka. At first, Mr. Condon called his land "Lawn Valley," but he changed his mind after learning that other people in Kansas were using the same name for their hometowns. He decided to rename his town after lawns which would now be present-day parts of downtown Leawood and Elkader Township. Leawood has been through many changes since its founding as a small community on railroad tracks six miles north of Wichita Falls in 1881. In 1907, LeawOOD incorporated as a municipality with a population of 21 residents—the first such incorporation in what is now Wichita County. A year later, during World War I, LeewOOD became one of eight municipalities within Wichita County that joined together to form the new Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA included all major cities and towns within Douglas and Sedgwick counties as well as most of northern Shawnee and southern Onalaska counties; it had a population of 1 million people at its peak in 1920. In 1990, following decades of continuous growth and development spearheaded by Mayor Bob Dole and City Manager Darrell Ketchum, LeawOOD become one of 10 communities within KCMO’s larger Lawrence/Overland Park MSA; it now has over 100,000 residents inside Greater Lawrence alone! For more than 25 years – ever since Mayor Dole took office – KCMO officials have worked diligently to ensure that every resident enjoys access to quality public education opportunities including world-renowned Hennepin Technical College (HTC) just east of town limits; industry leaders such as Boeing Co., Monsanto Co., UnitedHealthcare Plc., Schlumberger Ltd., Koch Industries Inc.—just minutes away; top-tier employers like Raytheon Co.; Huntsville Instrumetrics LLC.; Johnson Controls Inc.; US Steel Corp.—and many others! In 1907, Kansas Agricultural College (now KU) moved from Topeka to Leawood to provide education for farmers near Wichita. KU continued to enlarging its campus until it had more than 100 acres (40 hectares) of land by 1921. The school became a state university in 1932 and attained full university status in 1968.) Leawood has experienced many changes over the years, including being annexed by Topeka in 1907 and then becoming an independent city; experiencing industrialization during World War II; becoming known as a bedroom community for Topeka during the 1950s; experiencing significant growth during the 1990s as result of numerous high-technology companies establishing businesses here; and most recently experiencing growth due to new subdivisions completed throughout town since 2000. The downtown core retains much of its original architecture dating back to 1854 with examples such as the State Capitol building which still stands today complete with its marble flooring and gold dome – one of only two remaining Federal buildings left standing across America after being destroyed by fire just twenty years earlier! The old post office also remains intact with large windowsills that allow natural light into the interior making it one of the most popular tourist destinations around – perfect for photos or videos!
