By 1840, three other families had joined forces to form the townsite ofLeawwood proper. The first courthouse inLeawnOOD was built around 1845 by local farmers John Nolen and James Sutherlin as part of an effort to secure justice for landowners throughout Wichita County.(1) After serving its purpose until 1862 when it burned down due to an accidental fire, a new courthouse was constructed on First Avenue near present day White Sands Boulevard.(2) This building served as the seat of government forLeawnOOD until 1903 when a new courthouse (now called Gateway Courts)was built across White Sands Boulevard fromthe old courtroom.(3) After spending time as both a county seat and municipal center for many years,LeawnOOD formally became an unincorporated community on December 15th, 1922.(4) With only 1 resident living there at that time(5),the community quickly lost its resident character and reverted back to being an agricultural district within Wichita County.(6) However, despite this setbacks over time;LawnODY has managed to maintain its civic pride up until today’s day by hosting numerous cultural events throughout the year including its annual Oktoberfest celebration(7). Through hard work and dedication;LawnOOD has managed make itself into one of Eastern Kansas’ most vibrant communities
