Leavenworth is a small town in central Kansas, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town had been founded in 1867 by farmers from Ohio and Pennsylvania who named it after Liberty, New York. Leavenworth became a city in 1907, but retains its rural character. The first people to live here were the Shawnee, who occupied land around present-day Leavenworth for hundreds of years before they were displaced by the U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars of 1855-1863. In 1867, Englishmen built a log cabin on East Main Street and started to cultivate some land nearby; this early settlement was known as "Lebanon." In 1878, George Armstrong Custer was killed at Little Bighorn while leading his Seventh Cavalry Regiment against Native Americans near present-day Leavenworth; this event helped start what would become known as the Kansas City Comanche Wars (1898-1901). Many residents of Lafayette moved to Leavenworth in response to these hostilities and began to refer to their new community as "Custer's Land". The city incorporated as Leavenworth on January 1, 1907; it had a population of 6,000 people. At that time it was one of only two cities in Kansas with a permanent school system (the other being Wichita). By 1918 there were over 25 businesses in town and over 100 residents employed therein; however World War I interrupted all this growth and prosperity until 1919 when things began to improve again due largely to increased military spending within the state by then-Gov. James Peabody Kansa Sr.. During the 1920s and 1930s many developments took place including an original movie studio on Third Street called Keystone studios which produced numerous films including westerns such as "The Big Trail" (1927), "My Friend Harry" (1931), "Navy Ensign" (1935) and "A Tale Of Two Cities" ( 1932 ); also located here was KFC which opened its first restaurant in 1923 soon followed by many more thereafter which continue up until this day giving rise both iconic landmarks such as that now landmarked building next door (.pdf)and much local lore about those times like that old man with three horses used for delivering groceries right past your front porch
