The Leavenworth community was founded in 1881 when a group of farmers, named the "Leavenworth Sporting and Commercial Club," erected a small building on the corner of Seventh and Main Streets. The club's first public meeting was held on October 15th. The present clubhouse, which is located on Market Street, was built in 1929. In 1907, John A. Herter developed what is now known as Herter's Optical Shop at 826 Main Street in Leavenworth. At that time it was one of the most important optical businesses in the area. In 1912, Herter moved his business to 525 Elm Street in Topeka and continued to operate it until his death in 1936. In 1934, Clarence Eells opened his own scopes store at 1202 Noland Avenue in Topeka. He served as owner and head salesman from 1934 until his death in 1984. Eells was an early pioneer of modern optics salesmanship and has been considered one of the most influential men associated with Leavenworth optic society.
