The first Europeans to visit what is now Leavenworth were French traders from Quebec who set up a base of operations at Fort Leavenworth in 1763. From here they traded with the Shawnee Indians for goods and horses that helped them build their Overland Trail country route to California. In 1803, President James K. Polk sent General Andrew Jackson to explore what became Kansas Territory as part of his efforts to gain control over Mexico’s southern territories prior to any potential annexation into the United States. When he arrived at Fort Douglas near present day Wichita he discovered that there was no water available for cavalry or artillery so he ordered Major John Fetterman to construct a dam across the Arkansas River just downstream from present day Leavenworth so that military supplies could be brought upriver without having to go through Wichita. The fort served as both an army post and civilian trading center until it was abandoned in 1810 when Union forces arrived during the Mexican–American War (1846-1847). When Missouri passed her statehood laws within Kansas on November 16th, 1861, she included Leavenworth within her territory which made it an incorporated city under the jurisdiction of Topeka (then spelled Stillwater). On February 14th 1870 Topeka changed their name back to Leavenworth and added an “e” representing Indian heritage since many Native Americans had lived in Topeka before white settlement began adjacent to Arabella Creek where much later Stroud Park would be built; thus becoming one of three cities completely Indian-owned or controlled by Indians along with Presentation (Oklahoma) City and Muskogee (Oklahoma) City. In 1907–08 another “e” was added for Education Department staff member Alva Noyes when she moved from Topeka into what would become known as East Wichita; thisCity also retains its original name today – East Wichita Community Schools District #1 On October 15th 1907 residents of Topeka petitioned the Board of Education for charter schools which were granted authorization on December 3rd 1907 with Driscoll School being opened January 1st 1908 following passage of Act No 91323 entitled "An Act To Provide For The Organization And Management Of A Charter School In The City Of Leavenworth" With Wm J Hill Superintendent

Leavenworth is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by John Waddell and James Leavenworth as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The first post office was established in 1855. The town increased in size when it became a railroad center. In 1907, Leavenworth became an incorporated municipality. In 1925, the Kansas legislature passed an act creating Wichita County and giving it authority to annex parts of Douglas and Wyandotte counties east of the city of Topeka so that Wichita could become an even more important transportation hub. The towns of Leavenworth and Hutchinson were annexed into Wichita County during this time. The last major development in Leavenworth's history came with the opening of its only retail store in 1961; that store now anchors Main Street near Interstate 35W. That year also marked the beginning of what has been called "the heyday" for Leavenworth; businesses started coming back after a long hiatus caused by World War II shortages of materials due to lend-lease regulations
