Leavenworth is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 20,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County. In 1867, it became part of the new Territory of Kansas and in 1907 it became part of the new State of Kansas. The first permanent settler in Leavenworth was George Armstrong Custer who came there in 1859 from Indian Territory on his way to Fort Kearny. Custer died there six months later after being wounded by Indians while leading an attack against them at Battle Creek which ended with his death. His body was brought back to Leavenworth and interred at Mount Hope Cemetery near today's downtown area. Today, Custer's remains are still honored here as part of the town's history and culture, generating tourist interest and money for local businesses. In 1867, Leavenworth took land from the Shawnee Nation under pressure from Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction following their defeat in the Civil War. The Ulysses S Grant Elmira School District No 1 (later known as Wichita Falls Independent School District) bought 640 acres (248 hectares) south of present-day Leavenworth for $10 per acre from Alexander McNaught heirs grazing cattle on their property that had been ceded to them by President James Kiefer Polk when he sold off all federal land east of Omaha to settlers during his administration in 1854-55. The McNaught heirs donated most or all of this land to what is now Leavenworth on April 15, 1870; however some holdings were given away privately until 1900 when they were annexed into Wichita Falls district school board territory created following City-County merger Act approved by Legislature on November 2nd effective December 1st. On July 16th, 1861 US Cavalry Captain John Dodge killed three Native Americans at Wounded Knee Massacre Site northeast of Topeka while pursuing Union forces led by Major General Stephen Averill Harney under orders from Brigadier General William Halleck. On January 17th 1865 Dodge was courtmartialed and found guilty but resigned before sentence could be carried out. He moved to Missouri where he opened a hotel called "Dodge House" which operated until about 1880.Dodge House Museum
Dodge also served as Mayor (1881-85),^{City Councilmember}, Deputy Sheriff (1886-92). He married Anna Loring Swartzwelder on February 3rd 1840 and they had nine children: eight daughters named Anna Loring followed her father into business operations; one sonnamed JohnSwartzwelder born October 21st 1862 died young; two sons named Harry Swartzwelder born January 20th 1868 & May 2nd 1870 both deceased; one daughter named Nellie born December 14th 1870 survived until her death.
