The towns were named for Atchison's original hometowns: Edinburgh (now Topeka), Holland (now Wichita), and Waterloo (now Wichita Falls). The Oil Fields Act of 1837 established government jurisdiction over oilfields within this territory; thus, Atchison's towns became integral parts of this region's economy during its early years. In 1861-1862, Union troops fought in Kansas during the Civil War under General Sterling Price as part of Brigade Haltom’s First Regiment Infantry Volunteers commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Custer.
