Leavenworth is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,803 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County. The town was founded in 1855 and named for General James B. Holcomb. The first store in town was started by Solomon Aiken and his son-in-law William Sibley on Main Street in 1856. Aiken also operated a gristmill and sawmill around this time. In 1860, John Neely opened the first post office there with nine mail sacks. By 1870, groceries were being sold at the Post Office as well as blacksmithing supplies and hardware from David Waddell & Company. A fire destroyed most of the business district around 1900; however, new businesses soon appeared such as Joice's Cafe which became an important gathering place for locals and visitors alike until it closed its doors in 1954 due to lack of customers or interest from outside businesses. In 1904, Leland Hennepin organized a group of businessmen to form the Wichita Western Railway Company to build a branch line east from Topeka into Leavenworth County; this would later become known as the Kansas City Elkhorn Line Railroad (KCLR). Businesses along this line grew quickly but Hennepin died before construction could begin so control passed to other members of his group including George Brown who built a freight Depot adjacent to what is now First National Bank Plaza on Third Street near Elmwood Cemetery just north of I-70 (the former site of KCLR's main depot). Brown also acquired land adjoining First NationalBank Plaza that would be used for future development including shopping malls and schools when he purchased it from banksowned by them in 1969. The addition of automobiles made Leavenworth more accessible and demand for goods increased with people commuting into neighboring cities such as Topeka or Shawnee Mission for work during World War II; automobile manufacturing began operations at nearby Marshall Field's department store starting in 1942 which helped spur economic growth within Leavenworth over subsequent years while continuing to provide jobs for local residents during wartime times when many factories were closed down due to enemy attacks or war production shortages caused by nationwide rationing policies instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt following World War II . During the late 1940s through early 1950s many small shops closed because they could not compete with large retail stores that had opened up throughout Wichita during those years thanks largely to Interstate 70 having been built relatively recently after Dodge City was razed following its Battle Of Topeka on November 6th 1890 between American Indian forces led by Sitting Bull's son Teton Sioux Chief Crazy Horse against Ulysses S Grant’s Seventh Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Samuel Lipman . Numerous small towns across America experienced similar losses during that era as Interstate 20 bypassed their communities making it easier for larger cities to thrive while smaller towns struggled economically becoming less popular tourist destinations although some suchAs Holcomb still maintain a presence within their communities today despite having no formal Economic Development Authority unless noted otherwise
