Leavenworth is a town in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita, KS metropolitan area. The original village of Leavenworth was founded in 1854 by John Sutter and his partner David Hogg. In 1875, Leavenworth became the seat of government for all Leawood County. The first gun trigger in Kansas was built by Elisha Peck in 1868 at a place now known as Peck's Hill on the edge of what is now Wichita. The name Leavenworth comes from the word "leaven" which means to make bread with flour and "welcoming" because it was originally given as a gift to settlers who had arrived there in 1867. The town was laid out by marketeers John Ladd and David Laird and named for James Leavenworth, an American general who fought in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1871, but no mail service operated until 1890. In 1907 the railroad came through Leavenworth and changed the history of town; it became one of the largest employers in town with its new mill complex providing jobs for many people. The current elementary school building was built in 1914 and replaced an earlier frame schoolhouse which burned down on November 10, 1922. The old high school building also burned down but was rebuilt with brick and granite architecture and renamed after Mrs. Atherton (Mrs Hallett) Sills who donated land for that purpose. She also endowed a scholarship fund which has been used to build several buildings within the boundaries of Leavenworth including a library (1956), medical center (1963), senior citizens home (1977), community pool complex (1981) and more recent additions such as Poway High School baseball stadium/community center (2002). The first white settler in Leavenworth was George Armstrong Custer, who came to the area in 1851. The town was founded on May 3, 1854, by a group of merchants and farmers who traveled from St. Louis to buy land near the confluence of the Blue and White Rivers. The town quickly grew into a small community with around 100 residents. It became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. In 1861, Leavenworth joined the Union as part of Kansas City Territory. During the American Civil War, Leavenworth was home to both Confederate General John Buell's headquarters and Union General Ulysses S. Grant's campground. On October 16, 1862, Confederate Brigadier General Alexander McClellan's army attacked Union forces stationed at Leavenworth; however, McClellan's attack failed due to bad weather and lack of supporting artillery. In 1865, following the end of World War II and Kansas' admission into the United States as a state, Leavenworth experienced rapid growth as its population reached 10,000 people by 1970. The town has since grown into one of Kansas' largest cities with over 200 businesses and 1 million residents – making it one of the most populous cities inKC County.
