In 1951-1952, when Interstate 70 was constructed through central Kansas west of Wichita, much of the city's development took place within its boundaries including the construction of several large Kaiser Permanente hospitals including one on Main Street which continues to serve patients today. With so many businesses locating here during this period of rapid growth it is no wonder that downtown has remained largely unchanged since then other than some additional renovation projects over time! Since 2000 there have been several attempts by voters to change the name or status quo for downtown Leavenworth regarding issues such as increased traffic congestion due to recent medical facilities expansion; however these efforts have all failed despite heated public opposition from residents who feel their city should remain known simply as "Levensworth".
