Leavenworth, Kansas is a city in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. Leavenworth was founded as a Mormon settlement on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1855. The town became an agricultural center after railroads were built through the area in the early 1870s. In 1907, Leavenworth became one of three cities in Kansas to be incorporated as townships; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city under statehood. The history of Leavenworth goes back to 1855 when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Haskell County from Nauvoo, Illinois. They named their new settlement "Leavenworth," after Mount Zion which they had seen emerging from behind a cloud on July 12 that year while traveling northward along the Jackson Purchase Trail. The Mormons first established a cotton gin and potato field near present-day Leavenworth before moving eastward into what is now Gilpin County and beginning construction on their Salt Lake City Temple complex. By 1860, they had erected two outposts—the one near present-day Wichita Falls and another about 20 miles (32 km) south of present-day Leavenworth—and began trading with French Canadians who had moved westward across Canada during the Underground Railroad's escape attempt from slavery in 1849–50. In 1861, Brigham Young sent his brother John Dibble to lead an expedition against Fort Sumter in South Carolina rather than allow slaveholders within Utopia to Secede from Utah by force and collect $4 million for themselves instead; this episode is known as Dibble's Rebellion or The Sumter War Saga. Dibble's force consisted of about 100 men and horses but resulted in several thousand American slaves being freed and 2 cannons being taken away by Confederate forces retreating back upriver towards Charleston Harbor where they turned them over to Federal authorities responsible for emancipating those slaves living north of Mason Dixon's line at that time (see Emancipation Proclamation). LDS church leader Ezra Taft Benson visited Leavenworth shortly thereafter while on his way westward to preach anti-slavery sermons at some eastern Utah settlements he had organized called Relief Society meetings; Benson referred to it then as "the little town I am going visiting." He reported back favorably about what he saw there including its sturdy brick buildings with white trimmed trimming complete among other things! On September 21st 1865 Benson wrote: "I went today into [Leavenworth] and preached here for three hours...It has become my favorite place since coming here". The LDS Church purchased 320 acres (130 ha) adjacent topresent day downtown LaVista Park just northwest of historic courthouse square in 1905 for use as its first temple site which would serve as both a religious center and home for high ranking officials such as Presidents Joseph Fielding Smith (1881–1944), Franklin D Roosevelt (1945–1952), James Earl Carter Jr.'s wife Rosalynn Carter(briefly 1960–1969), Richard Nixon (1968–1974)), Gerald Ford's wife Elizabeth Taylor(1976-) – all without ever having set foot inside its walls! This facility was finally dedicated on October 6th 1974 following years' worth of preparation led by Mayor Harry Blackmun who also served concurrently as temple president from 1977 until his death atop Mount Carmel Cemetery just east thereof on November 10th 1998 aged 88 years old! Over ensuing decades additional temples have been builtat Winterset Mesa outside Omaha (), Lawrenceburg Junction off Interstate 45 between Lawrenceburg KY & Lebanon KY (& also Shawnee Missionary Baptist Church located southwest thereof ), Independence Township off Keystone Drive between Topeka KS & Salina KS (& again Shawnee Missionary Baptist Church located southwest thereof ), Bonneville Junction Islip Road northeast thereof just beyond Topeka OK’s city limits && finally Kelowna BC opposite Juan de Fuca Strait
Leavenworth was founded in 1854 by John L. Leavenworth as a small town on the Canadian side of the Kansas River. The town grew quickly and soon became a major center for agriculture and commerce. By 1907, Leavenworth had more than 12,000 residents and was one of the largest towns in Kansas. In 1915, Leavenworth was renamed to honor General George Custer after his death in battle at Little Bighorn.
