The Shawnee Indian Reservation is located in Leavenworth. Leavenworth was laid out in 1857 by Major John McLaughlin and named after Levenworth, England where he had been born in 1786. The first post office was established in Leavenworth on April 16, 1858. A railroad station was built there on the Union Pacific Railroad and served as the town's headquarters until it closed down in 1971. In 1881, two brothers - George W Barton and Alfred Barton - bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km²) of land southeast of town from Heman Webster for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). They began to build a farmhouse which became known as Barton's Grove Park. In 1915 they donated another tract of land to the city for use as a parkland called West Side Park%. In 1907, The Leavenworth Times reported that local merchants were planning to erect a Masonic temple near their market place due to popular demand from residents and visitors alike who "endeavored" to attend services there each Sabbath morning since doing so spoke against Sabbath observance among many people living within easy mile radius of their storeowners'. This report further stated that Masonic ceremonies would take place at 7:00 am each day except Mondays when they would be held at 10:00 am instead because Monday mornings were considered an open market day by some merchants who did not want their customers disturbed during business hours; furthermore this decision stemmed from concerns about possible profiteering activities associated with Temple ceremonies which could lead to competition among Merchants for audience members thereby reducing sales opportunities for them also". On November 5th 1907 "A resolution requesting that Masonic Ceremonies not be held on Mondays [was] introduced...with unanimous consent" by members of the Business Men's League". This vote followed proceedings preceding it during which time it had been determined by Committee mem-bers that if Temple ceremonies occurred on any other day than Mondays then such an event would have an adverse effect upon market prices resultant from increased attendance levels resulting from attempting thereto rather than lessening these effects attributable only to lack of disturbance caused thereby; accordingly on November 8th 1907 "A motion'n't carried,...in support...of...the motion made earlier" by Business Men's League mem-bers indicating that although they agreed with its intent but felt no need should arise from its presentation since Temple ceremonies could still occur without causing negative consequences thereto nevertheless this vote does reflect public sentiment prevalent at the time towards Freemasonry within local society." The first white man to live in Leavenworth, Kansas was David Wilburn. He arrived in 1847 and built a cabin on the south side of the city. In 1861, he married Mary Emmons and they moved to the north side of town. The Wilburns were the first family to own land in Leavenworth. They raised chickens and pigs, and later developed a small farm that produced hay, corn, beans, potatoes, apples and other vegetables. The Wilburns also founded a school in Leavenworth in 1872.
