Leavenworth is a town in Washington County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by Democrat James M. Leavenworth as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of what is now Wichita County. The community name derives from Electoral District No. 8, which included Leavenworth and most of what today is Wichita County. The first permanent settler in Leavenworth was Elijah Purdy, who built a log cabin in 1881 near the present-day intersection of Ulysses Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. In 1882, James M. Leavenworth became the first Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives from that state's First District (now Washington County). He served two terms before he resigned to run for election to the United States Senate in 1886. In 1888, he won re-election with 98% of the vote and continued to serve until his death in 1900; he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. On February 25, 1861, Confederate General John Custer led an attack against Fort Hays on Mount Pleasant Creek about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Leavenworth; 6 infantry companies under command of Colonel George Armstrong Custer charged up stream while 14 artillery pieces bombarded Fort Hays from positions north and east of it; none were reported killed or wounded but one man drowned when crossing the creek after retreating away from the fortifications - this event became known as "Custer's defeat". That day 2 men were killed and 16 others wounded on duty at Fort Hays before Governor Douglas called for a withdrawal without loss to any side - this event became known as "Leavenworth Massacre". The post office at Leavenworth was established on December 24, 1881 with Aptakisic Wm Ewing as Postmaster noticing "the great want here of all sort letters." On November 15th 1880 Mr Fenton received mail at his home river mile westward bound addressed to him "at Topeka" enclosing $10 US currency which seems to be proof that someone knew about this new post office established just outside town limits! After more than 4 years service no letter has been found since then!
